Prof. Dr. María Máñez Costa
Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), Hamburg, Germany

María Máñez Costa works in the Climate Impacts and Economics Department at the Climate Service Center Germany, as well as being visiting professor at the University of Valencia, Spain. Her research explores the vulnerability and adaptive capacity of socio-ecological systems to climate change. Her research focuses on the development of capacities for adaptation to climate change and the development of methods for managing and communicating climate impacts.

She has coordinated various European Union projects, working on the topic of “Global change and ecological change“. Her work repeatedly focused on questions of climate and water economics.

 

Theme 1: Adaptation of river basin management to global change

Dr. Ad Jeuken
Deltares, Delft, the Netherlands

Dr. Ad Jeuken is an expert advisor in the field of climate change adaptation and water management. He has a Master in Environmental Sciences and a PhD in Global Climate Modelling. After a career in climate science, he moved to work for Rijkswaterstaat, the national authority for water management in the Netherlands.

At Deltares he combines his knowledge and experience in water management with knowledge on climate change and methods and tools for dealing with future uncertainty. Leading the thematic Deltares program on climate adaptation and adaptive planning, he plays a central role in connecting science to the practice of policy making in these fields. He has been involved in much research and consultancy on the topic of adaptation. He can be regarded as an expert on approaches to develop and assess adaptive water management strategies.

 

Dr. Andreja Sušnik
Slovenian Environment Agency - ARSO, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Andreja Sušnik works in the Agrometeorological Department of Meteorological Office at Slovenian Environment Agency. She has PhD in Agronomy, with emphasis on agrometeorology. As a head of Agrometeorological Department, her work is mainly focused on operational agrometeorology, in parallel she is coordinating Drought Management Center for South Eastern Europe activities since 2006. Main topics of her work are development of agrometeorological services for different stakeholders, preparation of strategical documents related to vulnerability assessments and adaptation of agriculture to climate change, development of drought monitoring tools and methodology and management on national and international scale. She has been involved and coordinating many national and international projects and working groups related to agrometeorology/drought. She also performs learning interactions with different target groups.

 

Dr. Christos Zografos
John Hopkins University - Pompeu Fabra University Public Policy Centre, Barcelona, Spain

Christos Zografos is a Ramon y Cajal Research Fellow with the Department of Political & Social Sciences of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. He is an environmental social scientist studying environmental governance, transformation and conflict within the fields of political ecology and ecological economics. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Department of Environmental Studies of Masaryk University (Czech Republic).

Previously, he has worked as a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Environmental Science & Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) managing the ‘European Network of Political Ecology’ (ENTITLE) FP7 Marie Curie ITN, and co-ordinating the research of the FP7 collaborative research project ‘Climate Change, Hydro-conflicts and Human Security’ (CLICO). Christos has a PhD in Environmental Science & Technology (UAB), a Master of Advanced Studies in History & Economic Institutions (UAB), and an MSc in Ecological Economics (University of Edinburgh).

 

Dr. Sebastian Vicuña
Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Centro de Cambio Global, Santiago, Chile

Sebastian Vicuña is Associate Professor at the School of Engineering and Director of the Centro de Cambio Global at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. His research interests are related to water resources, hydrologic modeling, climate change adaptation and integrated watershed management.

Related to these research areas, Sebastian is Lead Author for the Second Assessment Report on Climate Change and Cities (ARC3-2), was an Author of the IPCC 5th Assessment Report in the chapter on Climate Change Impacts in Central and South America and was a Review Editor for the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Extreme Events in the chapter impacts. 

 

Theme 2: Science and society interactions in water management

Dr. Oriana Romano
OECD, Paris, France

Oriana Romano is a Policy Analyst at the OECD Water Governance Programme. She contributed to national and thematic reviews on multi-level water governance, urban water governance and water governance indicators. 

Before joining the OECD in 2013, she was university lecturer at the London Metropolitan University and the Department of Social Science of University of Naples “L’Orientale”, Italy. She holds a PhD in Institution, Economics and Law of Public Services.

Ms Anabel Sánchez
CREAF Research Centre, Barcelona, Spain

Anabel Sánchez is a biologist with a Master in Sustainable Water Management, working at CREAF Research Centre in Barcelona since 1996.

Her research focuses on assessing the impacts and vulnerability of Climate Change on water and forest ecosystems and developing adaptive management strategies working together with stakeholders from the related sectors. She has been involved in multiple national and European projects and, at present, participates in LIFE+ MEDACC (www.medacc-life.eu) project and coordinates BeWater project, FP7 Science in Society (www.bewaterproject.eu).

 

Dr. Filipe Moreira Alves
Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Modeling Group (CCIAM) / Centre for Ecology, Evolution & Environmental Changes (CE3C), Lisbon, University of Lisbon, Portugal

Filipe Moreira Alves is an economist with a Master's degree in Economics and Public Policy. He has been a  researcher at CCIAM / CE3C in the BASE action-research project since 2012.  A trainer in the European Union's Youth in Action Programme since 2008, he is President of the NGO Ecolution and cooperative-founder of Biovilla and Coopérnico.

He currently also coordinates two European projects - Equibridges and SIRCle: Social Innovation for Resilient Communities, whilst enrolled in the PhD programme at CENSE-FCT/UNL on Policies for Sustainable Development.

 

Dr. Marc Parés
Institute for Government and Public Policy (IGOP), Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Barcelona, Spain

Marc Parés is a geographer and political scientist leading the Research Group on Urban Governance, Commons, Internet and Social Innovation at the Institute for Government and Public Policies (IGOP) – Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain). He also teaches as Lecturer at the Geography Department.

From 2014 to 2016 he had a Marie Curie Fellowship, being Visiting Scholar at the NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service (USA) and the KU Leuven Planning and Development Unit (Belgium). He has also been a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Environment and Development at the University of Manchester (UK). He has a Ph.D., a MSc and a BSc in Environmental Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a BA in Political Sciences from the same university. His research has been focused on the fields of Urban Governance, Citizen Participation, Urban Political Ecology, Environmental Management and Social Innovation.

 

Mr. Clément Magos
GoodPlanet, Brussels, Belgium

Clément Magos works for GoodPlanet Belgium NPO as Project Manager in charge of water-related projects. GoodPlanet develops and coordinates sensitization, activation and participation projects related to water and other sustainability topics in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Morocco and Burkina Faso. The association also collaborates with a wide group of European and international NGOs and public authorities. 

Currently in the domain of water, GoodPlanet Belgium focuses on developing local youth water parliaments and enhancing youngsters to take part in the water management by meeting local stakeholders and developing concrete actions.  Clément has a Master in Political Science and Public Administration and Environmental Management, both from the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL).

Ms. Engineer Doha Zamel
Young Leaders Association/ Regional Environmental Centre, Zaghouan, Tunisia

Doha Zamel is a member of the Young Leader Association, Zaghouan. Young Leaders is an online, Facebook-based movement dedicated to empowering young to lead their generation to a better future. With 100+ members from across Tunisia, Young Leaders Council is the broadest and fastest-growing Tunisian peace movement today. It is a movement led by young adults, for young adults. 

Doha is also a country assistant in the field of water management at the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) in the WATER POrT project. She is involved in dialogue activities and provides support to actions related to integrated water resources management and climate change adaptation. She earned a hydraulic engineering degree from the National Institute of Agronomy of Tunis, and she has been involved for a year and half in the BeWater project within INRGREF.
