Citizen science engages public participation in scientific research projects. Through the use of web 2.0 technologies and smart phones, it seeks to democratise knowledge that was previously restricted to specific groups.
Barcelona City Council and its Department for Creativity and Innovation, through BCNLab, aim to promote citizen science as it can have a significant impact on the scientific community on an international level. New York, London, Paris and Amsterdam are cities that have developed citizen science projects that have been successful in terms of participation and results.
