WWW PR1The 24th annual World Water Week takes place this week in Stockholm, Sweden. Organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the 2014 edition explores the theme of "Energy and Water".

The interdependent relationship between water and energy has been overlooked in the past, but as the global population increases, so does the demand for food and energy and, in turn, the demand for vulnerable water resources. The challenge of providing and sustaining clean drinking water and energy for all is becoming a critical issue. This year's event will  open a dialogue between collaborating organisations, as well as individuals from around the globe, to promote awareness and knowledge and work towards joint solutions.

WWW PR2The Week opened with a presentation by Mr. Torgny Holmgren, Executive Director of the Stockholm International Water Institute who said: "The challenges are immense. With the global demand for water projected to grow by 55 per cent between 2000 and 2050 and electricity demand expected to increase by 50 per cent in the next two decades, there is an urgent need for a closer relationship between the energy and water communities if we are to provide solutions for all peoples to prosper." (See Press Release World Water Week 01.09.2014).

Over the course of the Week, energy and water communities will come together to tackle some of the most pressing issues, presenting scientific findings and participating in discussions about global water issues in seminars and workshops. The week will close with plenary sessions taking place on Friday 5 September. This year's World Water Week is off to a great start and the outcomes will be far-reaching in global decision-making towards a sustainable future.
