BeWater will feature at the European Climate Change Adaptation Conference (ECCA) in May.

“BeWater Project: Science and society co-creating four Mediterranean River Adaptation Plans to face water scarcity” will be presented by Coordinator, Anabel Sánchez (CREAF) during the session "Governance of Drought Adaptation in Europe: Different Regions, same Challenges?" chaired by Consortium partners ECOLOGIC. The Conference will take place from 12 - 14 May in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Lessons learned so far in the project related to water scarcity will be discussed, with indications that multidirectional and multi-sectorial knowledge transfer is crucial to enable the shift from a technocratic river basin management approach to innovative governance, adequate planning and integrated management processes.

Sustainable water management is an urgent challenge for the Euro-Mediterranean region which is exacerbated by climate change. Indeed, future climate projections estimate an increase of drought episodes and water scarcity, causing substantial socioeconomic conflicts and environmental impacts. Therefore, science and society must join forces to enhance effective adaptation policies, leading to increased resilience of the social-ecological systems at river basin level.

More than 1000 participants are expected to attend the ECCA, the second edition of this biannual conference.

ECCA offers a unique platform for researchers, policy makers, and businesses to share new research results, novel policy developments, and practical implementation experiences regarding climate change impacts and adaptation, as well as highlight opportunities for business innovations aimed at supporting the transition to low carbon societies. It will also show how climate change adaptation in Europe can contribute to job creation and other societal benefits.
