To ensure effective dialogue and collaboration between Science and Society, BeWater developed an innovative approach to foster sustainable water management in the Mediterranean in the face of global change.

The BeWater approach was applied in the Pedieos, Rmel, Tordera and Vipava river basins to identify challenges and water management options as input to river basin adaptation plans.

The four plans are important documents describing how challenges related to global change could be tackled in each of the river basins. In addition, these plans aim to serve as a reference for other basins - within the Mediterranean region and beyond - that wish to undertake such a participatory development process and increase their resilience.

Based on the lessons learned during the project, a handbook was developed, which documents the whole process to develop adaptation plans for river basins. Furthermore, a set of Policy briefs were prepared, which contain recommendations to strengthen policy and institutional frameworks in tackling global change impacts within water management and adaptation planning.
